Hlavním posláním tohoto simulačního nástroje je podpora zkoumání propustnosti/kapacity kolejových infrastruktur železničních systémů (zejména železničních stanic a uzlů). V porovnání s jinými simulátory železniční dopravy, které pracují na mikroskopické úrovni podrobnosti, uplatňuje MesoRail vyšší míru abstrakce. Prakticky to znamená, že jsou například: zanedbána sledování technických pracovníků, kteří pracují v terénu kolejišť; zjednodušeny technologické procesy obsluh vlaků a některé úkony nejsou uvažovány (např. posuny); zanedbání entit cestujících; příslušná kolejiště jsou v průběhu simulace zobrazována ve schematické podobě, a nikoliv v měřítku. Pro podporu rozhodování ohledně řešení konfliktů je využívána metoda reflektivních vnořených simulací, která prověřuje odlišné varianty řešení. Vnořené simulace jsou implementovány pomocí rekurzivního přístupu (tj. v případě vzniku konfliktu ve vnořené simulaci je možné rekurzivně vyvolat další vnořenou simulaci). eng	Software simulation support for determining capacity of railway stations infrastructure	Simulation tool MesoRail specializes in performing simulations of railway traffic at the mesoscopic level of detail. The main function of this simulation tool is to support the examination of the throughput/capacity of trackinfra structures of rail systems (especially railway stations and junctions). Compared to other rail traffic simulators that work at the microscopic level of detail, MesoRail uses a higher degree of abstraction. In practice, this means that, for example: the monitoring of technical staff working in the field of the tracks is neglected; the technological processes of train operators are simplified and some tasks are not considered (e.g. shunting); passenger entities are neglected; the relevant tracks are displayed in schematic form during the simulation, and not in scale.To support decision making regarding conflict resolution, the method of reflective nested simulations is used, which examines different resolution variants. Nested simulations are implemented using a recursive approach (i.e. in the event of a conflict in a nested simulation, it is possible to recursively invoke another nested simulation).
