The RHINOS project is focused on improvement of railway safety, line capacity and operational efficiency. For this purpose the EU-US research team integrates two satellite navigation systems (GPS and Galileo) with the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) to improve the European railway management and train control system known as ERTMS/ETCS. Utilization of the project results enables the replacement of very costly physical balises on the tracks with virtual balises. These virtual balises are detected using satellites. The proposed solution by the RHINOS experts, meets the highest requirements according to railway safety standards. The achieved results contribute to the scheduled commercial employment of ERTMS/ETCS, based on satellites to be installed by 2020 on a train line, close to Turin in Italy.
